3 Dogs BBQ was started in 2005 when Dan, a backyard BBQ enthusiast, saw an ad in the paper for the First Annual Alaska State BBQ Championship. Having watched several BBQ contest shows on TV, he decided that it would be fun to compete and signed up. Dan competed as a one man team (with help from his wife Barb) at the 2005 Alaska State BBQ Competition and named the team 3 Dogs BBQ in honor of the 3 mixed Labs that live with him and his Barb . Realizing that he couldn't do it all, he was joined by friends Andy and Joe by the 2006 season. John has been around since 2006 and was named to the team in 2008 with Joel signing on in 2009. 3 Dogs BBQ has competed at the Alaska State BBQ Championship, Hide Out Lounge's First Annual BBQ Contest, Big Daddy's Ho-Down Showdown BBQ contest and Block Party, Soltice BBQ Contest "Throwdown in the Downtown", Fair BQ BBQ Contest. BrrrBQ BBQ Contest, the Last Rib Standing BBQ Contest, and the Birch Hill Backyard BBQ Cook-Off.

3 Dogs BBQ consists of Dan Gilson (Founder and Head Cook), Barb Gilson (Wife and Primary Supporter), Andy McDonough (Executive Sous Chef, Runner, and Comic relief), John Brojakowski (Cook's assistant, Runner, and all around good guy), Joel Jensky (Handyman and Muscle), Trent Jackson (Resident Apprentice and Great Kid) and numerous Friends and Family.
